I'm going the distance this April to help bring life-changing CAR T-cell therapy home to New Zealand.

Right now, many Kiwis with aggressive blood cancers have to travel thousands of kilometres overseas and pay enormous costs to access CAR T treatment. 

I’m taking on this challenge because no one should have to leave Aotearoa for life-changing cancer care. Every kilometre I complete and every dollar I raise will support the Malaghan Institute’s ENABLE-2 trial - a critical step toward making CAR T-cell therapy available in New Zealand’s public health system, close to home and whānau. The treatment is both more targeted and less toxic than current treatments available in our public health system.

My WHY:

18 Months ago I was diagnosed with Follicular Lymphoma after noticing a lump near my collarbone. While currently not curable this is treatable.
6 Months ago, following a routine mammogram, I found out that this had transformed into the more aggressive Diffuse Large B-Cell Lymphoma. I started chemotherapy 4 months ago, ironically almost 12 months exactly after my father started chemotherapy for the same diagnosis. 

In April I will have officially completed full chemotherapy. I plan to challenge myself in going 200km, by foot or bike, while raising funds for Malaghan Institute so we can bring CAR T-cell therapy to Aoteroa and into our public system.

Abel Tasman hike with family in April

Completing the Abel Tasman with family on foot is helping me work towards the 200km goal.

Now halfway through the month with 60km to go and 5 weeks since my last infusion. 

I have completed the Abel Tasman with my family - it was a long held dream of mine. I had booked this tramp before my most recent diagnosis, and having this as a goal helped me to focus to get through the chemo. 

A huge thanks to those who have supported both me throughout my journey and to those who have donated to the Malaghan Institute to help bring this life changing treatment to Aotearoa.
