Sotaro | Allergic disease

"The worst symptom was how much it affected my self-confidence, especially as a teenager."

Sotaro's lifelong experience with eczema inspired him to become an immunologist. Today, he is researching how the immune system behaves in allergic skin disease – work that could offer better treatments to thousands of New Zealanders in the future.

Caitlin's interest in science is driven by a desire to develop safer, more effective therapies for people living with chronic illness. She’s researching how the immune system responds to fungal infections – understanding that could improve future treatments for disease.

Julie had to travel overseas for treatment. We're working to change that.

"During my time in Shanghai, I became aware of at least twenty New Zealanders who had travelled to China for CAR-T treatment because there was simply no option for us here. If treatments like this were available in New Zealand, people wouldn't have to leave behind the people they love, travel to a foreign country scared and exhausted, or spend their savings for a chance to extend their life."
