Together we can transform how diseases are prevented, treated and cured by harnessing the power of the immune system.
Many of today's most promising treatments exist because researchers spent years asking questions, testing ideas and building the knowledge that made those breakthroughs possible.
At the Malaghan Institute, our scientists are working to better understand the immune system and its relationship to human health, laying the foundations for future advances in cancer, allergies, infectious disease and more.
But breakthroughs don't happen on their own. They depend on people like you.
Your support today fuels the people and ideas behind the breakthroughs that will change lives.
We've already shown what’s possible.
The progress we’ve made in CAR T-cell therapy shows what can be achieved when New Zealanders back science.
Years of research have brought CAR T-cell therapy to New Zealand patients for the first time. But this is just one example of what’s possible when science is backed for the long term.
With your continued support, we can continue this momentum and do more – advancing research, developing better treatments, and making them available to all New Zealanders.
Meet the researchers behind the breakthroughs
Puja | Cancer
"For me, hearing stories from patients and their families about how transformative this therapy has been for them is what keeps me going."
Puja is developing ways to improve the effectiveness of CAR T-cell therapy for multiple myeloma. Your support helps researchers like Puja keep exploring new approaches that could one day save lives.
Sotaro | Allergic disease
"The worst symptom was how much it affected my self-confidence, especially as a teenager."
Sotaro's lifelong experience with eczema inspired him to become an immunologist. Today, he is researching how the immune system behaves in allergic skin disease – work that could offer better treatments to thousands of New Zealanders in the future.
Caitlin | Infectious disease
“There is still so much we do not know, and that makes this work exciting.”
Caitlin's interest in science is driven by a desire to develop safer, more effective therapies for people living with chronic illness. She’s researching how the immune system responds to fungal infections – understanding that could improve future treatments for disease.
Your donation could help fund our next breakthrough
Julie had to travel overseas for treatment. We're working to change that.
"During my time in Shanghai, I became aware of at least twenty New Zealanders who had travelled to China for CAR-T treatment because there was simply no option for us here. If treatments like this were available in New Zealand, people wouldn't have to leave behind the people they love, travel to a foreign country scared and exhausted, or spend their savings for a chance to extend their life."
Julie's story is a powerful reminder of what’s at stake when potentially life-saving treatments aren’t available in New Zealand.
By backing New Zealand research, you're helping ensure that tomorrow’s treatments are developed and delivered here at home, for everyone who needs them.
From cancer and infectious disease to allergic and inflammatory conditions, today’s research could shape the future of health for New Zealanders.
This future depends on the research happening right now.
And that research depends on you.
