I am going the distance to bring better cancer treatments to New Zealand. Please show your support.

I'm going the distance this April to help bring life-changing CAR T-cell therapy home to New Zealand.

As an Apheresis nurse, one phone call still stays with me to this day.

Years ago, I was caring for a patient with blood cancer undergoing HPC collection, a stem cell harvest. Partway through the procedure, I received a call telling me to stop the collection. Despite multiple attempts, there were no CD34+ (stem cells) circulating in his bloodstream to collect. Continuing would not change the outcome ,we were no longer truly helping him.

It was completely heartbreaking to press that STOP button and then look into my patient’s teary eyes.

At that time in NZ, we had no access to CAR-T therapy. For him ,and many other patients with aggressive blood cancers ,there were simply no other options.

Now, hearing about CAR-T cell therapy in one of the conferences I have attended, I often think, if only this had been available then, so many Kiwis might have had a fighting chance.

But even today, knowing that Kiwis must travel overseas and pay enormous costs to access CAR-T treatment is heartbreaking.

That’s why I’m taking on this challenge. No one should have to leave NZ for cancer care. Every KMs I complete and every dollar I raise will support the Malaghan Institute’s ENABLE-2 trial  a critical step toward making CAR-T cell therapy available within New Zealand’s public health system.

If you’re able, please support my challenge. ♥️
