March for Myeloma Join Us

Vinnie - 250km on the bike in March!

My de facto father in law and incredible grandad to my daughter Tilly, Colin MacDonald, was diagnosed with a nasty blood cancer a few years back - Multiple Myeloma. Colin has been through the ringer, having multiple treatments with gruelling and at times life-threatening side effects (you can read Colin's full story here: https://donate.malaghan.org.nz/s/116/126/e).

The Malaghan Institute, based in Wellington NZ, have some amazing research underway into a treatment for myeloma (and other cancers) called CAR-T Cell Therapy. This therapy is a kinder, gentler approach to treating cancer. While not currently available in NZ, it has shown promising results during trials and is already used extensively overseas with amazing results.

To raise money for the Malaghan Institute to allow them to keep researching this treatment and hopefully make it available to people like Colin, I'm taking part in the March for Myeloma (with a twist).

The aim for March for Myeloma is to walk or run 64km in the month of March (Colin is turning 64 in March). Given recent knee surgery I'm still awaiting clearance to actually start running, so I thought I would jump on the "bike" (my mum's knock-off peleton trainer) and try to do 64km a week. For someone who hasn't done any exercise in a year, it should be a good challenge!

I'll be posting the workouts on my strava account (to ensure accountability, and you can also fact check my lack of activity..): https://www.strava.com/athletes/39585404. There may be the odd update on the March for Myeloma Instagram page: https://www.instagram.com/marchformyeloma/.

If you'd like to support - please hit the donate button. Equally, if you'd like to take part in March for Myeloma you can click 'Join us' on the page. This will create your own page for you to start raising funds - all pages are linked to Colin's main one, and the money pools together.

All the best!

My Updates

First week down - 65km clocked up!

Tuesday 8th Mar
A good first week of Marching for Myeloma with four rides totalling 65km. Good to reach the target, but it feels like I left a bit in the tank (although two days were out with wedding festivities and the day after...).

Will see if I can nudge closer to 100km for the upcoming week. Great to see that we're so close to $20,000 thus far!
